BEGINNER SKILL CLASSES: Hands on

TO NEW MACHINE QUILTERS

Over the past four years I have been teaching beginning skill classes to the owners of long-arm quilting machines.  There will be no piecing of a quilt top, we will draw lines to simulate borders, sashing, and blocks, allowing you to treat this as a practice piece; as it was intended.  By covering the information in a simple format, it will allow us to spend an entire day on the free hand designs as well as the aspects of pantograph pattern quilting.  If you have specific questions regarding pantograph patterns please write your questions down and we will address them.  If you have questions, perhaps some of your fellow students will have the same ones.

You will be learning several techniques that may relate to custom quilting design.  We will be covering many freehand designs that you can use in sashings and borders, and even all over.  We will not actually custom quilt, but I will cover the process for you.  If you would like to work a little bit on stitch in the ditch please bring TWO pieced blocks sewn together with you and we will baste them onto the quilt near the end of our class.

My classes are taught as HANDS-ON.  Therefore, I can accommodate a maxium of four machine students at a time, you must register as limited space is available.  If you would like to have ONE person accompany you, that will be fine, as long as you both are willing to work on the same machine and the same fabric.  If additional students would like to attend, a machine will be reserved for them on a space available basis at a charge of $400 for the two days.  While in our studio I encourage you to look thru my extensive collection of patterns, and run them if you wish, look thru my library of quilt design books, and feel free to use any tools that I have.  In this way it will give you the opportunity to try it before you buy it.  This also helps with making a wish list for future purchases.

You will be standing quite a bit both days, please wear comfortable clothes and SHOES, your body will love you for it.  Class runs from 9-5 however, you can take a break to sit if needed.  Lunch will be provided, please advise if you have any special diet restrictions.

Supplies that you will need are very easy.  Scissors to clip thread; and one of each of the following TOP 100% cotton solid color fabric such as muslin 90” x 100” with center of the narrow side marked; BACKING fabric may be pieced of whatever 100% cotton as long as you square it up, also mark narrow side center.  Batting needs to be the equalivant of a queen batting 90-96” x 108”.  Please bring a decent low loft quality batting.  Be sure to mark your name on your tools the all look alike.  You will be provided with thread, all the bobbins for your use, marking tools, stencils, tape measures and a class handout.

Sometimes emergencies arise, please give me as much notice as you can if you should need to cancel your class, and I will do the same for you.  All classes will be cancelled if I don’t have at least two students.  Keep checking our web page for updates in class dates as it may necessary to change some due to guest teacher schedules and show commitments.

Space is limited to 4 students per class
